A person’s tone of voice can instantly change the meaning to a word, phrase and sentence. This is why it is SO IMPORTANT to teach students about using a proper tone of voice. In this quick mini lesson students will be able to choose an emotion to go along with a word of your choice. They will take turns guessing what emotion each of them portrays. In the end they will understand how meaningful tone of voice is and they will be able to come up with a class definition. This FREEBIE includes: Tone of Voice definition poster in color Tone of Voice definition poster in black and white Printable word/ phrase cards in color Printable word/ phrase cards in black and white Printable emotions cards in color Printable emotions cards in black and white Digital slides where students click and drag to circle their emotion This post will take you through everything you will need to know about this FREEBIE and how to use it in your in person, hybrid or online classroom. So if you’re ready, keep reading! Easy Prep for this Teach Kindness: Tone of Voice Lesson I have created a digital and printable lesson for you to easily teach your students about tone of voice in less than 15 minutes! I know the challenges of having a short amount of time to review SEL skills, which is why this mini activity packs a big punch. Best of all… the prep is super EASY! Prep and Materials for Printable Lesson If you are using this resource in your classroom, then you can print out… Tone of Voice definition poster in color or black and white Printable word/ phrase cards in color or black and white Printable emotions cards in color or black and white The number of emotions cards you print is up to you! You can choose to make a set for each student, pair of students or just one for you. Here is a list of materials that you may choose to use: Paper of your choice (white or color printer paper, white or color cardstock, etc.) Scissors Marker (to write your class definition on the tone of voice poster) Laminating sheets (optional to make cards more durable and reusable) Crayons or markers (optional if you choose to give a set of black and white emotions cards to each student) Prep for Digital Lesson To prep for this digital lesson all you have to do is decide which slides you want to use! I suggest using the: Tone of Voice definition poster in color Digital slides where students click and drag to circle their emotion If you need directions on how to copy your selected slides into a separate google slide, then you can follow my directions in the section, “Easy Google Slides Instructions for this FREE Digital and Printable Tone of Voice Lesson.” To use the digital slides simply have a student say the word using the emotion of their choice. Once students guess the emotion you or the student can circle the corresponding emotion picture using the circles from the “bank.” Lesson Plan for this Tone of Voice Activity This activity can be as short or long as you want to make it! Below is an overview of the steps to complete this lesson with your class. 1. Ask your students what they think, “tone of voice” means. Work together to brainstorm a class definition. Possible definitions: Using your voice to express different emotions The way a person chooses to speak to someone It’s not about what you say, it’s how you say it 2. Pick one of the words or phrases (no, okay, yes, I don’t care, etc.) 3. Ask each student to pick an emotion without telling anyone. Students can partner talk or the teacher can call on them to say the word/ phrase with their chosen emotion 4. Ask the other students to guess what emotion was being used by… Using their own facial expressions to show the emotion Using their fingers to show a 1, 2, 3 or 4 Holding up the corresponding emotion card 5. Revisit your definition for “Tone of Voice” to see if students want to make changes. Write your class definition in the “Tone of Voice” poster and hang it in your class. Tips to Making this Activity Short and Sweet Like most teachers, my social emotional lessons always seem to get cut short with an overwhelming amount of academics I have to get to throughout the day. Here are some tips if you are on a tight schedule: Print and cut all of the cards ahead of time Have students pair up Choose only 4-5 words instead of all 12 Tips to Stretch Out this Activity if you Find Extra Time in Your Schedule If you find that your students need more work on this SEL skill or you find a little extra room in your schedule then you can… Give students their own set of emotions cards and have them cut and color them Have students come up with the other emotions and words/ phrases to act out Give each student their own Tone of Voice definition poster to fill out at the end of the activity Easy Google Slides Instructions for this FREE Digital and Printable Tone of Voice Lesson If you are new here then you may not know that I am OBSESSED with Google Slides. You will find that all of the resources on this blog are made with Google Slides for a number of reasons… 1. You can create and edit resources on your Google Drive that automatically saves your work. Unlike most editable resources, this one SAVES the changes you make. This means if you are using the digital version and choose to type your class definition on the Tone of Voice poster in the beginning of the year, then you revisit this lesson a few months later the definition will still be there… YAY! 2. You can access all of my resources in your Google SLIDES so you never have to worry about losing or misplacing them. 3. Wherever you are (at home, in school, the library etc.) and whatever device (laptop, PC, Chromebook, Ipad, smartphone etc.) you can access Google Slides. 4.

Here is a question that many teachers find themselves asking their students daily… Are you being a bucket filler? If you are one of these teachers, then you are going to LOVE this behavior management strategy freebie! Each student is given a paper bucket and can work towards filling their bucket everyday. This free resource includes: WE ARE BUCKET FILLERS Colorful Sign Digital Big Colorful Buckets Digital Small Colorful Buckets WE ARE BUCKET FILLERS Black and white Sign Printable Big Buckets in Black and White Printable Small Buckets in Black and White This post will take you through everything you will need to know about this FREEBIE and the benefits of being a bucket filler classroom. So if you’re ready, let’s get started! My Favorite Book for the First Week of School… Have You Filled a Bucket Today? If you are a preschool or early elementary school teacher, then you have probably heard of the book, “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” It is an awesome book that I make sure to read to my students within the first week of school because it talks about being kind and making good choices. After reading the book you can create an anchor chart of bucket filling and bucket dipping behaviors. Bucket Filling Behavior Listening to the teacher Telling the truth Following the rules Being kind to others Bucket Dipping Behavior Hurting people Not following directions Using mean words Cutting in line Bucket filling and dipping seems to be an easy concept for most preschool, kindergarten and first grade students to understand. Throughout the year you can reread this book and review the anchor chart when your class needs a reminder. How to use Bucket Fillers as a Fun Classroom and Behavior Management System After reading the book and creating an anchor chart, you can introduce a behavior management system with buckets with your students. Simply put, each student gets their own bucket. They can earn a pom-pom (printable version) or dot (digital version) when they are being bucket fillers. If they are bucket dipping you can choose to take a pom poms or dots away. There are two ways to fill these buckets… 1. Pom poms- With the hook side of velcro you can stick pom poms on the buckets and reuse them all year long. You can choose to reset the amount of pom poms students have in their bucket daily or once a week. 2. Stickers- Once the bucket is full students can get a new blank bucket to color in. This method takes more paper and A LOT of stickers, but my students seem to LOVE to take home their buckets to show their families. Materials for the Printable Version If you are using this resource in your classroom, then you can print out the buckets (directions are below) on white paper and have students color in their own buckets or you can print out the buckets on color paper. Here is a list of materials that you may choose to use: Paper of your choice (white or color printer paper, white or color cardstock, etc.) Scissors and Tape Pom poms, dot stickers, or fun stickers for bucket filling behavior Laminating sheets (optional to make buckets more durable) Hook side of velcro (only if you are using pom poms to stick on the buckets) Going Digital for Distance Learning If you are going digital I have included 2 templates to choose from. The first template has 6 buckets per page, the second template has 12 per page. Choose the template that makes sense for the number of students in your classroom. Make sure to duplicate the slide if you need more buckets (directions are in step 3 of the next section, “Easy Google Slides Instructions for these FREE Digital and Printable Buckets.” Once you have the correct number of buckets you can add your students names in the text boxes labeled, “Name Here.” Tip: When you reset your students’ buckets (daily or weekly) duplicate the original slide instead of moving all of the dots back to the bank. Easy Google Slides Instructions for these FREE Digital and Printable Buckets If you are new here then you may not know that I am OBSESSED with Google Slides. You will find that all of the resources on this blog are made with Google Slides for a number of reasons… 1. You can create and edit resources on your Google Drive that automatically saves your work. Unlike most editable resources, this one SAVES the changes you make. This means if you are using the digital version and choose to reset the buckets weekly, then any dots your students earn from Monday will still be there Tuesday and for the rest of the week… YAY! 2. You can access all of my resources in your Google Slides so you never have to worry about losing or misplacing them. 3. Wherever you are (at home, in school, the library etc.) and whatever device (laptop, PC, Chromebook, Ipad, smartphone, etc.) you can access Google Slides. 4. So if you’re ready, keep reading! How to Effectively Use a Word Wall in Kindergarten and First Grade Classroom If you teach little learners, it can feel overwhelming at times to keep track of all of the sight words they need to remember. That is why a word wall is super helpful! In my classroom I go through these steps when teaching my students their new words for the week: Sing a sight word song Say it, spell it, say it Unscramble magnet letters and put them in the correct order Put our sight word on our sight word wall After putting new words on your word wall, make sure to consistently refer back to them so that your students become more comfortable utilizing this tool. You can do this during your morning meeting, while reviewing sight words, independent reading time, writing, etc. No Wall Space in Your Classroom? Try Using an Interactive Word Wall An interactive word wall uses a similar concept to the traditional word wall, but it is a HUGE SPACE SAVER and well… more interactive! Here are some benefits to switching to an interactive word wall: It takes up a fraction of the space… Words are bundled together by beginning letter sound and put on a ring instead of posted in a vertical line It will most likely get used more… Not only will students love flipping through the words on the ring, but you can also have them play games with the sight word cards! It is portable… No matter where a student is working in the classroom, they will have easy access to the word wall by taking the ring off and carrying it to their workspace. Getting Your Word Wall Setup for Your in Person or Online Classroom Whether your district is starting off the school year with distance learning, going hybrid, or will potentially switch to a virtual classroom platform you may be wondering how to keep some sense of structure and normalcy for your students. This is why I created a resource that can be used either digitally or in the physical classroom. Materials for the Printable Version If you are using this resource in your classroom, then you can print out either the color or black and white version (directions are below). Here is a list of materials that you may choose to use: Paper of your choice (white or color printer paper, white or color cardstock, etc.) Scissors and Tape Laminating sheets (optional) I recommend that you laminate these headers and sight word cards. They will be more durable when using an interactive word wall and will give you the ability to reuse these pieces every year! Going Digital for Distance Learning If you are going digital I have included 2 templates to choose from. They are essentially the same thing, but one is longer than the other (but cannot be shown in “present” mode). Choose the template that makes sense for your online classroom. To type in your sight words: Double click underneath the letter of the word you want to add. Type the word in. Click enter to add another word underneath. TIP: If you use an interactive word wall in your classroom you can pull up this digital one on your projector. This way all of your students can reference all of their sight words during times like writer’s workshop or drop everything and read. Easy Google Slides Instructions for these FREE Digital and Printable Word Wall Letters If you are new here then you may not know that I am OBSESSED with Google Slides.

Looking for a classroom management strategy that is simple to use and keep up with? If you are a preschool or early elementary school teacher I suggest you try out this clip chart! Clip charts are an awesome way of holding students accountable for their behavior because they are a great visual and easy to understand. I have been using this clip chart in my Kindergarten classroom for years now and have had a lot of success with it. My students are constantly engaged with the clip chart because they know that they can always be moved up or down. They truly feel a sense of accomplishment when they clip up and are extremely motivated to change their behavior if they ever get clipped down below green. How to Effectively Use a Clip Chart with Your Students Students typically start each day on the color green or “Ready to Learn.” They can move up or down the clip chart based on their behavior. If students are showing role model behavior they clip up, but if they are making poor choices they clip down. Here are the levels in order: Superstar (Pink) You Rock (Purple) Great Job (Blue) Ready to Learn (Green) Warning (Yellow) Last Chance (Orange) STOP! (Red) I chose these colors based on the color of the rainbow, but if you would like to print your chart on different color paper or color it in yourself I have created a black and white version as well. Review Expectations and Model Your Classroom Clip Chart If you are using the printable version of this clip chart in your classroom, I suggest that you place this chart in a spot that is easily accessible to you and your students. For example, since my students and I spend most of our time on the carpet, I placed my clip chart right next to my teacher chair. This way you can limit distractions by easily clipping students up or down. When introducing this clip chart make sure to explain each level. A great way to do this is to model different behaviors and discuss with students which color they would move to based on those behaviors. For example, when in the hallway you could say, “Monica is using walking feet, her hands are by her side and she has a bubble! If we were using the clip chart I would clip her up to blue.” For the first few days try not to clip anyone to orange or red (you want your students to buy into how great the clip chart is… not to discourage them!). Also make sure to manage your students expectations about clipping up to pink… students should be going above and beyond what is expected of them in order to reach “Superstar.” Giving Students Praise and Positive Reinforcement Most students thrive on positive praise, which is why this clip chart may become your new best friend. The excitement never seems to wear off when a student gets to clip up. Here are a few reasons why a student could be clipped up: A student shows role model behavior A student shows an act of kindness towards his or her peer A student receives a compliment in the hallway from a staff member A student tries his or her best and/ or overcomes an obstacle When a student gets to clip up make sure to explicitly tell the class why. It gives other students a chance to change their behavior and reminds students what the expectations are. Giving Students Clip Down Warnings without Distracting from Your Teaching The most daunting type of behavior management system is when you feel like it takes away from your teaching. Luckily, I have found that you can use a clip chart nonverbally, saving your time and energy. Here is how you can continue teaching and address unwanted behavior at the same time: Give a student a warning by touching their name on the clip chart Make eye contact with a student as you clip them down Make a general statement (I love seeing so many students sitting quietly. 3 seconds to sit criss cross with a bubble or I am going to start clipping down) In most circumstances, I suggest that you allow students to clip up to green once they have changed their behavior. It is important that students turn their day around, but it could be very difficult and unmotivating for them to do so if they remain below green. Getting Your Clip Chart Setup for Your in Person or Online Classroom Whether your district is starting off the school year with distance learning, going hybrid, or will potentially switch to a virtual classroom platform you may be wondering how to keep some sense of structure and normalcy for your students. This is why I created a resource that can be used either digitally or in the physical classroom. Materials for the Printable Version If you are using this resource in your classroom, then you can print out this clip chart in color or black and white (directions are below). Here is a list of materials that you may choose to use: White or color printer paper Laminating sheets Scissors and tape Clothespins Marker Going Digital for Distance Learning If you are going digital I have included 2 templates to choose from. They have the same wording and colors for each level, but different options for your students’ names. For the first option, simply double click the boxes labeled, “Name Here,” to type your students’ names. The second option has student numbers, but you can also edit them to be students’ initials. Depending on the size of your class you may choose to delete or add more name boxes to your digital clip chart. To delete the name boxes simply right mouse click on the box and then click, “delete.” To add more boxes click on the name box you would like to duplicate, then copy and paste the box. Easy Google Slides Instructions for this FREE Digital and Printable Clip Chart If you are new here then you may not know that I am OBSESSED with Google Slides. You can either use this resource for your in person class, distance learning, or both! I am IN LOVE with Tens Frames because there are so many benefits with using this tool in your classroom. Here are some of the skills that I teach my Kindergarten students using these Days in School Tens Frames that could also work for you if you are an early elementary school teacher: Subitizing Decomposing numbers Adding one more/ or one less and ten more/ ten less Counting by 1s, 5s and 10s Counting to 100 and beyond This post will take you through everything you will need to know about this FREEBIE and all of the pros that come with incorporating tens frames in your daily schedule. So if you’re ready, keep reading! Using Tens Frames During Your Morning Meeting I always start off my morning meeting with a greeting, our calendar, a daily schedule and these Days in School Tens Frames. My students LOVE counting with these tens frames… especially when we use our “flashers” to count by 10s. When Introducing Tens Frames to Your Students… Explicitly explain what a tens frame is… A tens frame is called a tens frame because of its 10 boxes We use tens frames to help us count more easily by 1s, 5s and 10s Talk about how we will add a dot to each box… From left to right because that is how we read One per day because each dot represents another day we’ve been in school Questions to ask your students How many dots should we add today? Why? How can we count our days in schools? Let’s do it! In a complete sentence, how many days have we been in school? If today we have been in school ____ days, tomorrow we will have been in school for how many days? How many more days do we have until our current tens frame is complete? Materials for the Printable Version If you are using this resource in your classroom, then you can print out these tens frames (directions are below) and either laminate them or staple them straight to your bulletin board.

The first few weeks of school are definitely the hardest, ESPECIALLY when your students have NEVER gone to school before. One activity that I do multiple times throughout the beginning of the year are Play Doh name mats. No matter how many times my students do this activity they never get tired of it. You can access all of my resources in your Google Slides so you never have to worry about losing or misplacing them. 3. Wherever you are (at home, in school, the library etc.) and whatever device (laptop, PC, Chromebook, Ipad, smartphone, etc.) you can access Google Slides. 4. If you are already familiar with Google Slides, then you can scroll to the bottom of this post and click the rainbow button labeled, “Click Here for FREEBIE,” to access these FREE and EDITABLE Play Doh Mats. However, if you would like a quick step by step of how to use this resource, then keep reading! Using Google Slides to Access this Free and Editable Play Doh Mat Printable After downloading this product you can make a copy for yourself. This is super helpful because you can pick and choose which slides you want in your presentation. For example, if you only want to use the superheroes and back to school templates, then you can make a copy, keeping those two slides and deleting the rest. 1. Click the rainbow button labeled, “Click Here for FREEBIE.” 2. Once the Google Slide opens in another tab, click on File → Make a Copy → Entire Presentation. Then, click the yellow button, “OK.” 3. Delete any slides that you do not want in the presentation you just made. You can do this by clicking on the slide to highlight it, then then right mouse click and hit Delete. P.S. – Don’t worry, you have the original downloaded in your Google Drive already so if you accidentally delete a page you can always go back in the original and copy and paste it into the slide. 4. When writing your students’ names on each mat, you are going to want to… Click the slide that corresponds with the mat you want to use. Click on Edit → Duplicate. Now, the slide that you selected should be duplicated! Keep repeating this process until you have the number of crowns you need for your class. 5. Click on each textbox and type your student’s name where it says, “Name.” 6. Print the mats on your paper of choice and wah lah! You are officially a Google Slides Master! You can choose if you would like your students to color in their own play doh mats or if you would rather print the mats on color paper. Materials Needed In order to do this activity with your students, you will need some basic supplies. I have attached links to some of the products if you are in need of any of the materials: Paper of your choice (white or color printer paper, white or color cardstock, etc.) Crayons or markers (Optional if you are printing on color paper) Laminating sheets or page protectors (Optional, but highly recommended!) I highly recommend that you either use page protectors or laminate these mats. It will make cleaning up easy and give you the ability to reuse this activity throughout the year! Using these Play Doh mats in Your Classroom When introducing this activity I would go over your rules about play doh. For example, not mixing colors, keeping the play doh on the mat, etc. It always helps to model what you mean so that your students have a visual to go along with the expectation. I would even teach them how you want them to clean up… even explicitly showing them how to put the play doh in the container and click it shut. Another tip when teaching expectations is to set a timer that tells your students when to clean up. Your students are going to be super excited for this activity so give them a 5 minute and 1 minute warning. I also always tell my students that if they clean up before I finish counting down, then they can do the activity again tomorrow, which really motivates them to be the first ones to pick up! Tips to Making this Activity Short and Sweet Back to school can be super hectic so if it is towards the end of the day and you notice there is only 15 minutes before pack up… don’t sweat it! To make this activity shorter you can: Print these mats on color paper ahead of time Call students by group and hand them a play doh container… you get what you get and you don’t get upset 🙂 Remind students that they can do this activity again if they clean up before you finish counting down! (But make sure you stick to your word, if you plan on saying this!) Tips to Stretch Out this Activity if you Find Extra Time in Your Schedule When handing out the mats, show each printable to your students to see if they can identify their names Allow for “free time” with the play dough after your students have finished tracing their name with play dough 3 times Have students use other materials aside from play dough (erasers, gems, buttons, pennies, etc.) P.s. – Although I keep mentioning that this is a Back to School activity… I actually use these mats ALL YEAR LONG! These mats are perfect to use as a station when introducing your students to either literacy or play centers. I also put it in my sub plans as a substitute for play centers when I am absent. The Moment You’ve Been Waiting for… Click Below for the Play dough Mats!
